Planning consent has been granted for the development of 70 acres of land adjacent to the existing Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The 2020 Vision is to look to the future in which the campus becomes an international centre of excellence, supporting the growth of scientific understanding, the discovery of new medical techniques, the education of healthcare staff, economic growth and improved access to modernized NHS services.

 The proposals comprise:

 

  • A "Clinical" area of 7.80 hectares (19.27 acres) for NHS and private clinical development.
  • A "Research" area of 10.56 hectares (26 acres) of employment land for commercial development comprising biomedical and biotechnology research and development activities, related support activities, related higher education and sui-generis medical research institutes.
  • A "Clinical/Research" area of 5.2 hectares (12.84 acres) comprising employment land for commercial development as defined above, or further NHS and private clinical development.  This area includes 2.2 hectares (5.44 acres) reserved for the possible relocation of Papworth Hospital.
